How to Care for Your Rustic Metal Sculptures (and Prevent Extra Rust)

Rustic metal sculptures naturally develop character over time, but the right care keeps them strong, beautiful, and protected from unnecessary rust. Whether your piece is 3 feet or 9 feet tall, a little maintenance goes a long way—especially outdoors.

1. Clean Your Sculpture Every Few Months

Dust, dirt, and moisture can speed up rust.
Use a soft brush or dry cloth to wipe the surface.
For deeper cleaning, use mild soap + water, then dry completely.

2. Keep It Dry When You Can

A little rain won’t hurt it, but standing water will.
Make sure the sculpture isn’t sitting directly on soil or grass.
Use stones, pavers, or a raised base to prevent moisture buildup.

3. Apply a Protective Clear Coat

This is the most important step.
Use a clear outdoor metal sealant (matte or satin finish).
This helps keep the natural rustic look while blocking extra rust.

How Often to Apply It:

Every 6–12 months, depending on weather.
If you live in a place with heavy rain, humidity, or snow, aim for every 6 months.

4. Check for Trouble Spots

Look for areas where water collects, like folds or deep textures.
Light surface rust is normal, but if it builds too fast, reapply your sealant sooner.

5. Winter Tips

Snow and freezing temps can accelerate rust.
If possible, move the sculpture under a covered spot during extreme winter months.
If not, a fresh clear coat before winter goes a long way.
